It's inevitable: sooner or later, you are going to borrow money. Whether it's a loan for a car, a house, or the simple convenience of a credit card, you are going to send in an application.

This will prompt a second inevitability: a lender will pull up a copy of your credit report and credit score.

If you have stellar credit, this is a very good thing. A lender will see that you've always paid your bills on time, that your existing credit balances are low, and that you have no negative marks on the accounts you've held for years. You'll be noted as having prime credit, and if the other information you've submitted on your application is favorable, you will likely be approved for your loan at a low interest rate.

RICHMOND - Virginia has a better credit score than the U.S. government and state officials hope to keep it that way.

But Gov. Bob McDonnell said Virginia must remain vigilant to protect its top-notch credit rating.

State officials have not heard of any threats to the state's AAA credit rating since Standard and Poor's, or S&P, downgraded the federal government's credit rating to AA+ last week. Instead of a downgrade, Moody's reaffirmed Virginia's rating, McDonnell said.

Improving your credit scores takes time, but it can be done. Start by getting free copies of your three major credit reports at the government-authorized site annualcreditreport.com.

1) Check your reports for accuracy. Financial columnist Liz Weston, author of "Your Credit Score," says to look for credit cards or other accounts that aren't yours, negative entries that are more than 7 years old, duplicate past-due items and incorrect Social Security number or date of birth.

2) Dispute errors. Credit bureaus are required by law to investigate mistakes you bring to their attention and report back to you. Typically, they ask the creditor that reported the past-due information to check its records.

Credit card deal brings TN schools nice payday

WASHINGTON — Eighteen Tennessee colleges, student groups and alumni associations earned $1.8 million last year from agreements allowing credit card companies to market college-themed cards to students and alumni.

Most of that money went to the University of Tennessee, which received $1.4 million through a marketing agreement with Chase, according to Federal Reserve data.

The university’s contract, in place since 1998, is the fifth-most-lucrative in the nation. The money funds scholarships and alumni projects, according to UT spokeswoman Gina Stafford.

Last week, I returned from visiting my sister in San Jose, Calif., and got a much needed rest. California is an awesome state with everything you can think of to do, and it’s extremely multicultural. I saw people getting their cards back wrapped in the receipt, not checking to see if it was their card. I saw people placing credit cards in back pockets of their pants or just throwing them into purses. Some of these issues are a nightmare waiting to happen! Why? They look for people whose body language suggests a happy-go-lucky, here-I-am-on-vacation attitude, not paying attention to their actions or surroundings.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has criticised councils for their extravagant spending on local authority credit cards.

Mr Pickles said some councils had been enjoying the 'high life' after the Daily Telegraph published details of foreign trips, expensive meals and luxury items, which were all been paid for on credit.

"I want to be able to get a car some day," says Ms. Villacorta, a financial analyst in Long Beach, Calif. "I want to get it on my own and not need to get help from my parents."

Beware friends in need if you value your credit rating

Neither a borrower nor a lender be, at least when it comes to your friends. That’s the message from research by the Post Office, which shows that recession-hit Brits borrowed around £7 billion from their mates during 2010 – and that less than half has been repaid.

Nearly a fifth of people in the study said they could not remember exactly how much they had lent, while 18 per cent admitted to handing out more than they could afford.

Lynn McDonough says fees that his business pays mount up when customers use credit and debit cards to make small purchases at his three restaurants, including Connell’s I and II in Lafayette and Eau Claire, and Connell’s Club 12 in Fall Creek.

The problem lies with the fee that banks charge for electronic transactions. McDonough said banks charge the same fee for a $1 transaction as for a $100 transaction.

“Small businesses cannot afford to pay these high interchange fees,” he said.
That’s why on Monday he’s headed to Washington, D.C., along with Rob Summerfield of Two Acres Supper Club in Bloomer, to support a law McDonough says the banking lobby would like to put on the shelf.

ATLANTA -- An unpaid parking ticket may not seem like a big deal to some, but Channel 2 Action News has learned if you don’t pay in the city of Atlanta, it could put a big dent in your credit score.
Nicole Will told Channel 2’s Tom Regan her credit score dropped 20 points after she neglected to pay a $25 parking ticket. She said in two weeks the ticket doubled to $50. “You wouldn’t think an unpaid parking ticket would bring strikes against your credit report,” Will said.

Two months after she received the ticket, Will said she got notices from collection agencies and soon learned her impressive credit score of 775 had fallen to 755.

Reports are trickling out from Sony PlayStation Network users about recent fraudulent charges on the credit cards they used for the PlayStation service. But it can't be substantiated at this time whether the fraud is a result of the data breach at Sony, and the timing of the reports could be coincidental.

Sony warned yesterday that customer names, e-mail addresses, birthdays, passwords, usernames, and possibly credit card account information was obtained by an "unauthorized person" between April 17 and 19. As many as 75 million customer accounts are affected.

A study released by Demos, a research and advocacy organization, may shed light on why some working families have credit card debt and others don't.

The study, "Understanding the Debt Difference," is based on survey research of 2,248 low- and middle-income adults between April 2008 and August 2008, and contrasts the demographics, financial habits and economic circumstances of those with credit card debt and those without it.

For survey respondents who met the criteria for the "indebted" group, the average amount owed was $9,799, and 52% said they had the same or more debt than three years before. More than half of the indebted households said they had been late or had missed a credit card payment, and 37% were still paying off a credit card they had cancelled.
